Freezing night before rescue

Three people and two dogs spent a freezing night in the backcountry on Vancouver Island.

The group was rescued by helicopter from Strathcona Provincial Park on Saturday after realizing they were not adequately equipped for a planned three-day snowshoe hike.

“They ... realized they had gotten themselves in over their heads,” Comox Valley Search and Rescue spokesman Paul Berry told CTV News. “The conditions were not what they anticipated.”

One woman and one dog were slightly injured in the ordeal, which saw -20 C temperatures overnight.

The group used a GPS device to contact RCMP, who alerted search and rescue.
