Massive rocks fall on hwy

A rockslide that reportedly sent boulders larger than cars across Highway 97 between Summerland and Peachland temporarily closed the highway Thursday night.

The rockslide occurred sometime shortly before 7:30 p.m, closing both lanes of traffic just south of La Punta Norte Bed and Breakfast.

By 8:45 p.m, traffic was flowing in both direction again, with southbound vehicles using one of the northbound lanes, while both of the southbound lanes remained blocked.

“The rocks that have come down, way bigger than cars for sure and almost as big as some people's small houses,” said Ronda Barzilay, who drove by the scene at about 8:45 p.m.

“They've got firetrucks there and I've just seen a loader heading that way.”

Barzilay says there is a “massive rock face” above the west side of the highway in the area where the rocks fell from.

No vehicles are believed to have been hit by any of the falling rocks.
