Bail in manslaughter case

Four young people charged in connection to the killing of a 23-year-old Kelowna man appeared in court Monday, and three of them were released on bail.

Nathan Truant, 26, and Noah Vaten, 20, each Kelowna residents, along with an 18-year-old Kelowna man and woman were formally charged with manslaughter on Friday.

Esa Carriere was found by police near the Queensway bus loop with serious stab wounds on July 1, just after the Canada Day fireworks. He later died in hospital.

No further details about how the five people knew each other or what caused the fight to occur have been released. Police said a violent altercation broke out on Water Street at 10:50 p.m.

Truant, Vaten and the 18-year-old man all appeared in Kelowna Provincial Court, Monday.

It was Truant’s second appearance, and he was released on bail, subject to several conditions.

Vaten made his first appearance and his case was adjourned to Tuesday for a scheduling of a bail hearing.

The 18-year-old male "was ordered released into the care of a responsible person, pursuant to Section 31 of the Youth Criminal Justice Act," said Alisa Adams with the BC Prosecution Service.

Truant and the 18-year-old man will next appear in court on Feb. 14 at 1:30 p.m. The 18-year-old woman has been released on bail and is expected to also appear in court on Feb. 14.

Carriere had only been living in Kelowna for two weeks before he was killed.

Manslaughter carries no minimum sentence, and sentences vary from life in prison to probation.
