Parking ban on snow routes

Tuesday's snowstorm has prompted the City of Kelowna to place parking bans on all snow routes within city boundaries.

The ban pertains to residents living on designated snow routes in Wilden, the Ponds, Magic Estates, Dilworth Mountain, Academy Way, Black Mountain and Kirschner Mountain.

Residents parked on the street have 24 hours to move their vehicles.

The ban is in effect until the city deems the event over.

Vehicles that remain parked on snow routes during the temporary parking ban are subject to enforcement, up to and including a $50 fine or towing.

The city is encouraging all other residents not living on snow routes to also move vehicles off the road to assist plows clearing snow from neighbourhood streets.

City crews clear and de-ice municipal streets, including snow routes, by priority classification.

  • Priority One includes high-traffic roads such as Gordon Drive.
  • Priority Two includes collector roads such as Richter Street, bus routes, school zones, town centers and emergency vehicle stations.
  • Priority Three includes local roads in neighbourhoods and priority four includes remaining lanes.
  • Highway 97 (Harvey Avenue) and Highway 33 are maintained by the Provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Residents and business owners are reminded that they are responsible for clearing snow off sidewalks adjacent to their property. Some residents find snow clearing a difficult task, particularly seniors and those with an injury or mobility challenges. The City encourages residents to help out their neighbours by becoming a Snow Angel.
