Serwa hits podium

Kelowna's Kelsey Serwa hit the podium for the first time on what is her final World Cup ski cross season.

Serwa finished third in the final of a race Sunday in Idre Fjall, Sweden.

She won her quarter-final heat and finished second in the semi-final, just behind teammate Brittany Phelan.

A third teammate, Marielle Thompson won the other semi, sending three Canadians into the final.

Serwa finished ahead of Thompson, but behind Phelan, giving Canada two of the three medals.

Fanny Smith of Switzerland captured the gold.

The previous day, Serwa came in seventh in a World Cup race on the same course. Heidi Zacher of Germany won that race with Thompson finishing second.

Serwa is ninth in the World Cup ski cross points standings.

The circuit now shifts to Blue Mountain in Ontario for the first of two races in North America.

They compete Saturday at Blue Mountain, then the following weekend in Park City, Utah.

Serwa, the defending Olympic champion, is retiring from competitive racing after this season.
