Probation for fraudster

A Penticton woman was sentenced to 12 months probation Friday for the fraudulent use of stolen credit and debit cards.

Vienna Cardinal, 29, pleaded guilty to one count of fraud under $5,000 after being caught on Aug. 4, 2018 using stolen cards to make about $250 in purchases.

The cards had been stolen along with a wallet and tools from a truck in front of a Penticton home sometime the previous night. Cardinal was caught on surveillance footage making the purchases using the “tap” function between 4:30 and 6:30 a.m. at gas stations and Tim Hortons.

She was arrested the very next day.

Defence lawyer Nelson Selamaj said his client had been offered the cards by some acquaintances and being broke, she made the decision to use them.

Judge Michelle Daneliuk sentenced Cardinal to a one-month conditional sentence and 11 months probation and 20 hours of community service. For her first month, she will be under a curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
