Gov't pot shop proposed

Prince George could be home to the province’s second BC Cannabis store.

An application will go before city council Monday for a rezoning at a strip mall at 120-6565 Southridge Avenue, which formally housed a bank.

In a letter to council, the Liquor and Cannabis Distribution Branch indicated it's interested in the site because the retail area has ample parking and is easily accessible to customers.

The store would be 2,000 square feet and be designed in a bright and welcoming manner. If approved, Prince George would become the second B.C. city with a government run-pot shop after the Kamloops location that opened on legalization day.

Government-operated cannabis shops do not require a license from the province but have to follow local zoning and bylaw processes.

The proposal is going up for first reading Monday, which if passed, would set the stage for a public hearing at a later date.
