Robbed after just opening

A new Kelowna business was eager to open their specialty coffee shop, but after just 48 hours from opening, they were crushed.

Head roaster at Canoe Coffee Roasters Nathanael Sherman said he showed up to the store to find the back glass door shattered on Monday morning.

“It was a deflating thing to walk into this morning,” he said.

The store had their soft opening on Saturday and was looking forward to their new start on Laurel Avenue.

"Such an incredible disappointment after the high of our opening day. We are so sorry to everyone who was looking forward to visiting the café."

Sherman called RCMP, but said they don’t have any security cameras installed yet.

“We weren’t able to get any description or anything. All that we have is just the things that were stolen,” he said.

A safe located inside the store with a till of about $400 was taken along with the coffee shop's tablet and laptop.

The small business is focusing on fixing the window in the door which will cost about $600, but they are thankful their space wasn’t damaged.

“The nice thing is that there was no vandalism so it still looks as gorgeous as ever,” he said.

A fellow coffee enthusiast set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the shop feel supported and the shop is hoping they can re-open next week.

“It is frustrating, but it will cause us to open that much stronger when we do,” said Sherman.
