The City of Vernon says a gas leak at 43rd Street and 16th Avenue has been turned off, and FortisBC is on site making the necessary repairs.
People are encouraged to stay away from the area while repairs are being made.
Transit service on Route 5 has been affected.

UPDATE: 5 p.m.
FortisBC has stopped a gas leak near 43rd Street and 16th Avenue.
At this point, there is no indication that service has been disrupted.
"Vernon Fire Rescue Services are standing by as a precautionary measure and Bylaw Compliance officers are assisting with traffic control," stated City of Vernon communication manager Nick Nilsen.
"People are advised to avoid the area if possible to allow responders to work."
Crews will remain on scene as a precaution.

Emergency responders are on the scene of a gas leak in Vernon.
The area around 43rd St. and 16 Ave. is closed off.
Fortis is standing by.
Crews involved are working at providing media with an update, but until that comes, the public is being asked to stay away from the area.
