Chilling out on Kal Lake

It's kind of like a polar bear swim on a stand up board.

Once again Kalavida’s annual Winter Chill Paddle and Social drew people to Kalamalka Lake in Coldstream for a quick paddle before indulging in some warm bevvies and friendly banter.

Kevin O'Brien, with Kalavida, organized the event, calling it a summer reunion for SUP enthusiasts.

“It's such a beautiful day, it feels like it's June,” said O'Brien Saturday. “It's a social gathering. Just a go out and paddle to say 'I did it.'”

People come from the Lower Mainland, Kootenays and, of course, the Okanagan to hit the water for a paddle.

Last year, strong winds limited the paddling time, but this year the lake is calm under sunny blue skies, making for ideal, if not somewhat chilly, paddling conditions.

The high on Saturday was expected to reach 5 C.

“It's just stunning outside right now,” said O'Brien. “People will drive by and they will honk and people in the cafe watch as we walk past them and think 'What the heck.' It's a fun event."
