Students ready to ride

Madison, Frankie and Nathan are “over the moon” with their new rides.

The three School District 83 students recently received their adaptive bikes, just in time for Christmas.

Grant applications were submitted to several children’s charities to help the students get an adapted bike.

School district physiotherapist Eline den Boer, who searched out grant opportunities and submitted applications, is happy to report the Variety Heart Foundation, known for its annual Telethon, awarded grants for the adapted bikes for Madison, Grade 4 at Silver Creek, Frankie, Grade 2 at Hillcrest, and Nathan, Grade 9 at Jackson.

“These special bikes will give the students the opportunity to be physically active in a fun way and join their peers, friends and family in bike riding activities at school, home and in the community,” said den Boer, adding she is also seeking a grant for an adapted bicycle for a fourth student, who attends A.L. Fortune.

“We have not received word yet of a grant approval. But we will keep working on the acquisition of funding until we succeed,” she said.
