Alleged shooter back in jail

A Penticton man accused in a fatal shooting last year is back behind bars after being arrested Thursday morning.

Sylvian Demers, 37, was arrested without incident by the targeted enforcement unit and will appear in court later today.

A warrant was issued for his arrest Wednesday after he failed to show up for court.

Demers is facing one count of manslaughter using a firearm in the shooting death of Randall Toews on April 26, 2017.

While Demers was arrested immediately after the incident, he was released and was not charged until Oct. 26, 2018. He was granted bail on Oct. 29 under conditions to not contact any Crown witnesses or possess firearms.

The reasons for the bail decision are covered under a standard publication ban.

Both Demers and Toews have lengthy criminal records.

Neighbours told Castanet right before the shooting they heard loud banging and yelling, “I know you're in here,” prior to a gunshot.

Toews stumbled down the steps and died in the parking lot of the building at 998 Creston Avenue.
