Ski hills starved for snow

Skiers and snowboarders in the South Okanagan will have a limited chance to get out on the slopes for the first time this season this weekend.

Apex Mountain is planning on opening with its T-bar and a pair of runs, Old Mill and Adrian's Alley, on Friday with an alpine base of just 45 centimetres.

Tickets will be 50 per cent off until mother nature co-operates and more terrain can be opened.

Looking south, Baldy Mountain outside Oliver, will likely not be able to open on Friday as planned.

Lifts remain on standby and will start turning as soon as more snow falls.

“Mother Nature and the great snowmakers in the sky coated Baldy with 18 cm of snow this week,” the resort said in a news release. “We are currently sitting on a settled base of 48cm at the top of the Eagle Chair.”

Baldy is still inviting people up onto the hill, with the Baldy Bar opening at the lodge 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., providing a place to stop after a day of snowshoeing or snowball fight.

Looking north, Big White, Silver Star and Sun Peaks are all in the process opening additional terrain thanks to this week's snowfall.
