Takes time to sand roads

With winter arriving in the North Okanagan, city officials are advising motorists to drive carefully and rest assured, city crews are doing what they can to keep city streets safe.

Wet roads, combined with early morning freezing temperatures, have resulted in icy conditions over the last few days.

City crews have been using a combination of sand, salt and liquid de-icer to address the issue, however, the timing of the freeze has resulted in challenging conditions.

Over the last few days, temperatures have dropped below freezing between 4-5 a.m., turning wet roads into icy roads.

According to the city, normal response times for City crews to sand and salt all main routes within the city is approximately six hours which has resulted in icy conditions until mid to late morning.

Temperatures are expected to rise over the next few days which should help alleviate the problem on the short term, but motorists are still advised to use caution.
