Carnival wants to stay home

The Vernon Winter Carnival Society has again presented its case to Vernon City Council as it tries to remain at its longtime location in downtown.

The City of Vernon had issued the society an eviction notice stating that the building at 3401 35 Ave. was passed it useful lifespan and due to annual flooding the building was no longer safe.

"What is good about this location is when you say Carnival to the citizens of the North Okanagan, no one has doubts as to where it is," explained the society's chair Deb White Vernon City Council Monday. "It is a staple in the community."

The society has argued that the city's assessment of the building is not accurate and that other than historic flooding in 2017, the building does not flood that often.

"Actually, when the flooding happened, I went back to the archives," said White to council. "I couldn't find any reports on any of the minutes that showed that it had flooded before."

Under its current contract with the city, the society would have to leave the building in June 2019.

However, after White's presentation and added support by councillor Kari Gares, the city council agreed to have staff take another look and present its finding in the new year.

The City of Vernon has provided a home in one form or another since 1981.

The society moved into its current home on 35th Ave. in 1995.
