Don't leave valuables in car

Kamloops RCMP are happy to announce more drivers have finally started to lock their unattended vehicles.

On Dec. 7, RCMP Crime Prevention volunteers and Auxiliary Constables went through many neighbourhoods in Kamloops to check parked vehicles.

Out of the hundreds of vehicles that were inspected, only one was unlocked.

This is a huge improvement over previous months.

“These numbers reflect the reports Kamloops RCMP has been receiving over the past few months,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie.  “The number of reports of Theft from Vehicles has remained the same."

"However, the number of thefts that include having the vehicle’s window broken has increased substantially.”

Unfortunately, 59 of these locked vehicles were found to have valuables in plain view.

The volunteers said some of the items inside the vehicles were wallets, purses, computers and other electronics.

Motorists are reminded that locking a vehicle is not enough if valuable items are left inside.

After parking your vehicle, take all items with you and then lock the doors.
