Folding on casino plan

Victoria's Mayor is folding on plans for a downtown casino in B.C.'s capital.

Lisa Helps says she'll submit a motion to council to tell the B.C. Lottery Corporation the city no longer supports the idea.

Council voted in 2015 to explore a casino, but a report detailing the extent of money laundering in B.C.'s gaming industry has changed the mayor's mind, CTV News reports.

"There's too much information that's come out with regard to money laundering, trafficking in fentanyl, organized crime," she told CTV.

"Why would we invite that into Victoria? It doesn't make any sense," she said.

Since last summer's independent report by Dr. Peter German, BCLC has said it is taking steps to wipe out money laundering at B.C. casinos.

Council is scheduled to vote Thursday on a formal rejection of the casino plan.
