Reducing stress in students

Madison Erhardt

It's exam season at UBC Okanagan and that can mean stress for students, but the BARK program is here to help.

''It makes a huge difference. You see students coming in and beelining to the doors to see the dogs. It Just gives them that ten minutes where they aren't thinking about exams, put a smile on their face and talk to other people who are going through the same thing," said Freya Green, BARK program coordinator.

BARK is a dog therapy program under the direction of Dr. John Tyler Binfet at the campus.

BARK brings together university students and trained therapy dogs and handlers in an effort to reduce stress, fight homesickness, foster interpersonal connections and promote the overall well-being of students.

The dogs are set up in the flex space of the library several times over exam season.

"We have 60 dogs and handlers right now who are very experienced and if you are looking to join our team, visit our webpage," Green said.
