Referendum deadline near

If you're one of the approximately 1.9 million eligible voters in B.C. who have not returned their election reform referendum ballot, time is quickly running out.

Completed ballots must be received by Elections BC by 4:30 p.m. Friday, so it's unlikely ballots mailed today will reach their office in time.

However, there are several locations in the Okanagan and Shuswap to drop off ballots in person.

Referendum ballots can be dropped off at Service BC locations, including:

  • 305-478 Bernard Ave. in Kelowna
  • 40 Calgary Ave. in Penticton
  • 3201 - 30th St. in Vernon
  • 850A - 16th St. NE, Salmon Arm

The deadline was extended one week due to service disruptions resulting from Canada Post's rotating strikes.

As of Thursday morning, about 40 per cent of the 3.297 million eligible ballots had been received. Of those, more than 35 per cent had been screened.

B.C. residents are being asked to determine whether the keep the first past the post election system, or change to a system of proportional representation.

Elections BC has not set a timeline as to when results will be tabulated.
