Metro Vancouver TransLink system saw its most riders ever last month.

The transit authority operates the region's SkyTrain, HandyDART, SeaBus, West Coast Express and city transit buses. Together, they saw a combined total of 39.65 million riders in October.

That handily beats the previous record of 39.2 million set in February 2010, during Vancouver Olympics.

TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond said the numbers are a sign riders are responding to better transit service.

Rising gas prices are also a major incentive for more people to use public transit.

TransLink plans to add double-decker buses next year.
