Ponderosa coming down

After months of back and forth and legal manoeuvring, buildings on the former Ponderosa Motel site are finally being torn down.

Heavy machinery showed up on the site Monday, and knocked down two dilapidated buildings on the side of the site. As of late Monday, the building at the back of the property remained standing.

Late last month, a construction fence went up around the site on Harvey Avenue, next to Parkinson Rec Centre, warning people of an asbestos hazard.

At that time, bylaw manager David Gazley said the owner had painted over graffiti on the buildings, but appeared unwilling to demolish them, despite an order from the city to do so.

At the time, the matter was in the hands of the city's lawyers.

The order from the city gave 30 days to raze the buildings and clean up overgrown vegetation or the city would do it and bill the owner.

The Ponderosa closed in 2011. Since then, it has become a haven for squatters.

Police and the fire department have been called to the site numerous times for various complaints, including four fires.
