Hearing set for pot shop

Osoyoos town council will hear the public’s opinion on a proposed cannabis retail storefront being proposed downtown during a public hearing next month.

Council gave first two readings to a rezoning application Monday to allow a cannabis storefront to operate at 8304 72 Ave., at the former home of Osoyoos signs.

The Town of Osoyoos has not allowed cannabis stores into their zoning bylaws, meaning a full rezoning and public hearing is required for each proposal.

Director of planning Gina MacKay says the municipality has not received a formal referral from the BC Cannabis and Liquor Control Board regarding the property, but she anticipates one will follow if rezoning is approved.

The rezoning application states the storefront will operate under the “Canna Cabana” monkier and will be operated by Richard Stagg, one of the owners of a store operating just outside Oliver town limits under the same name that was selling cannabis prior to legalization.

Councillors sent the proposal to public hearing with little discussion, but voiced desire to hear opinions at the hearing set for Dec. 3, 4 p.m. at town hall.
