Homeless man dies in fire

A homeless man in Osoyoos has perished after an overnight fire consumed the pickup he was sleeping in.

Emergency crews were called to a fully engulfed Chevrolet S10 on Tuesday at 1:42 a.m. at a home on Nighthawk Drive.

The fire department arrived shortly after police and extinguished the fire which had spread to a second vehicle and was nearing the home.

The woman living at the house was quickly evacuated with help from the RCMP.

“Once the fire was out, human remains were located in the back seat of the S10 pickup,” Sgt. Jason Bayda said in a news release. “The Osoyoos RCMP are aware a 54-year-old homeless male did use this pickup truck to sleep in on a friend’s driveway and had been doing so for several months.”

An investigation has determined the fire was accidental and not suspicious. The death has been turned over to the BC Coroners Service.
