Feds back local tech firm

A Penticton manufacturer of medicinal technology has received financial backing from the federal government to commercialize its flagship product.

Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan was at Okanagan College Tuesday on behalf of Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation and science to announced Ottawa has loaned XCO Tech Inc. $800,000 to bring its proprietary XPSTM and BioAnalyticsTM platform to market.

The technology uses motion tracking and biometric data to better measure human performance and health, which could be used for sport performance training or to aid in the treatment of concussed individuals.

"The advanced technology being commercialized by XCO Tech Inc. not only has potential to significantly enhance future methods of coaching, athletic development, and sports rehabilitation, but will also create new jobs for highly qualified personnel and economic growth for British Columbia and beyond,” Sajjan said.

Penticton-based XCO Tech Inc. is a young, growing company working to advance precision medicine with technology, according to a government news release. 

"The WINN funding will allow us hire the talent we need to bring our athletic training and concussion innovations to market,” company CEO Scott McMillan said. “It is great to be recognized by the federal government that XCO's technology and products have the potential to have a dramatic impact on the performance and safety of athletes and on the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of concussions suffered by individuals."
