Warriors on historic run

Lucas Cullen has been on fire during the Warriors' seven-game winning streak.

As winning streaks go, seven is a nice, tidy number. It's big enough to get your attention, and that of your opposition. But, depending on the franchise, may or may not be historic.

It's reaching historic proportions for the West Kelowna Warriors.

Their current run is the second longest since the franchise relocated to the city in 2006.

The club record, eight, was set between Feb. 1 and 22, 2008. They used that late-season run to finish second in the Interior Division, just behind the Penticton Vees.

This current run has allowed the Warriors to leapfrog five teams, and climb from sixth to a share of top spot with the Merritt Centennials.

But, in the competitive Interior Division, where Penticton and Salmon Arm lurk just two points back with Vernon four in arrears, those gains can be wiped out with one bad week.

The Warriors will shoot for that record-typing eighth straight win tonight, when they entertain the lowly Surrey Eagles at Royal LePage Place.

The Eagles come into the game with just six wins and 13 points to show for their first 23 games.

During the streak, the Warriors have been led by rookie Mike Hardman (8g-3a), and veterans Chase Dubois (3g-7a), Lucas Cullen (6g-2a) and Wyatt Head (8 assists).

For the Warriors, Saturday's game also begins a rough stretch of five games in just seven days.

They travel to Merritt for a Sunday afternoon tilt, then face Penticton in a home-and-home set Tuesday and Wednesday before finishing off the week at home Friday to the Vipers.
