Best drinks on display

UPDATE: 9:10 a.m.

The judges' choice award for best cocktail at the sixth annual Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery Mixoff went to Rowan Henderson from downtown Kelowna's Salt & Brick.

Henderson's creation, called A Smokey Entertainment, was his own take on the classic Manhattan cocktail.

"I tried to showcase my skill, by creating one, my own bitters, and my own vermouth, and then just going with a classic cocktail, because at the end of the day that's what this whole thing is about, bringing a little bit of class to it," Henderson said.

The people's choice award for best cocktail went to Shane O'Dwyer from Big White's Globe Café & Tapas with his Peaches and Dreams cocktail, while Cam Taves and Jerry Hines from The Train Station Pub won people’s choice best bite with their ‘Brioche French Toast.'

Some of the best bartenders in the Okanagan went head to head Thursday night, showing off their best creations.

Kelowna's Laurel Packing House was filled with many hungry and thirsty people for the sixth annual Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery Mixoff. And the chefs and bartenders from ten local restaurants didn't disappoint.

In their creations, the bartenders were required to use an alcohol from Okanagan Spirits along with a local beer, wine or cider, and then pair it with food.

“They're being judged on presentation, on taste, on the pairing of the item, on the simplicity of creating the cocktail,” said Rosanne Ting-Mak Brown, the event's producer.

Bartenders at this year's event came from Craft Beer Market, The Table at Codfather's Market, The Train Station Pub, Micro Bar & Bites, Waterfront Restaurant, Jacks Pizza & Liquor, Oak + Cru, BNA Brewing, Salt & Brick and Big White's Globe.

“It's just a great time for all of us to come together and showcase what we like to do,” said Salt & Brick's Rowan Henderson.
