New council gets to work

It's traditionally more ceremony than substance – but that didn't stop West Kelowna's new council from getting some work done on inauguration day.

During a brief meeting after the swearing-in ceremony, Coun. Rick deJong asked about the status of an RCMP resource review of policing in the city.

The question came in response to a letter from Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth.

The letter indicated the minister shared the city's concern that the review is not complete, but indicated it would be expedited in "as timely (a manner) as possible."

"I would like to see a more specific timeline. I really would like to know if this is going to be done within 2019, at the very least," said deJong.

He tabled a motion asking the mayor's office to respond to the RCMP letter, requesting a more specific timeline for the review of policing resources.

It's believed the city is subsidizing the provincial share of police resources, meaning the taxpayers of West Kelowna are paying taxes that should be paid by all of B.C.
