Zero wait at PTCC polls

Wait times to vote have been minimal in Penticton for general voting today at the Trade and Convention Centre, less than four hours before polls close.

“The previous election we saw about 9,000 (votes cast),” explained chief election officer Laurie Darcus. “Right now we are sitting at about 8,000, so if we have a strong four hours of turnout we could meet or beat that.”

A staggering 4,900 people cast their ballots early during three days of advanced voting, possibly due to lineups that plagued 2014’s general voting day.

Lineups today, however, have been non-existent with wait times well under five minutes most of the day at the Trade and Convention Centre. At the Seniors Centre social media reports indicate wait times were around 20 minutes for much of the day.

Roughly 80 elections workers are at the polling station at the Trade and Convention Centre, with another 30 at the Seniors Drop-In Centre. Polls are open until 8 p.m.

Castanet will be live streaming the vote count and announcement of winners tonight shortly after polls close.
