Corteo wows audience

Madison Erhardt

Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo wowed crowds at Prospera Place on opening night in Kelowna.

Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown.

The concept, stage design and presentation bring a theatrical atmosphere like no other to the confines of an arena more usually host to WHL hockey.

"We have over 100 people working together to make a show like this happen," said publicist Max Batista. "There are 51 performers from 18 different nationalities."

The unique production, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, premiered in Montreal under the Big Top in 2005. Since then, it has amazed eight million people in 64 cities and 19 countries on four continents.

"It's one of the most unique Cirque du Soleil performances. The stage is right in the middle of the arena, so we will have people on both sides, which gives the audience the perspective of the actor," Batista added.
