Rockets squander late lead

The Kelowna Rockets achilles' heel came back to bite at the worst possible moment Saturday.

Just second after giving up the game tying goal with less than six minutes to go in regulation time, the Rockets found themselves a man down.

The penalty kill, which had given up 14 goals in five-plus games, got burned. Isaac Johnson scored what turned out to be the game winner just 19 seconds after Erik Gardiner was sent into the box, in a 5-4 victory.

It gave the Americans a split of the home-and-home set between the two teams. Kelowna won 3-2 Friday in Kennewick to snap a four-game losing streak.

Saturday defeat was the Rockets sixth straight on home ice to open the season.

The Ams took a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, but the Rockets battled back in the second.

Nolan Foote and Kaeden Korczak both scored on the power play in the middle frame to even the score at 2-2.

Jack Cowell's first of the season early in the third gave the Rockets their first lead of the night.

After Johnson tied it, rookie Dallon Wilton scored his second career WHL goal and second in as many nights to again give Kelowna a one-goal lead.

But, Nolan Yaremko again tied it, and 27 seconds later, Johnson ended it.

Roman Basran stopped 33 of 38 shots he faced, as he made back-to-back starts on consecutive nights.

The Rockets, 2-9, are off this week as they get set for their first three-game weekend of the season.

The Rockets play back-to-back in Victoria Friday and Saturday, before heading back to the mainland for a Sunday afternoon tilt with the Vancouver Giants.
