Gas prices on rise

Fuel prices in parts of the province have jumped thanks to the recent natural gas explosion near Prince George.

On Vancouver island prices spiked by 15 cents a litre as a result of the incident.

Washington State refineries rely on BC natural gas to refine gasoline and diesel fuel.

Opposition Leader Andrew Wilkinson is now calling on the NDP to take immediate action to ease the burden on B.C. families.

"The NDP could act today to help drivers by reducing the Provincial Motor Fuel Tax," says Wilkinson. "In fact, John Horgan should have taken action when we first urged this last spring. This is a government that claims to care about affordability. They talk the talk but they never walk the walk."

British Columbians pay the highest gas taxes in North America. Under the previous BC Liberal government, citizens received a tax break to compensate for these high costs. The NDP canceled that refund when they formed government.

Natural gas service is gradually being restored to much of BC with the use of a smaller pipeline.

Industry analysts say the prices increases could spread across BC.
