Craft brewery approved

A craft brewery proposed for downtown Summerland has been approved by district council.

The brewery planned for 13220 Victoria Road, the former home of Cozy Bay Seafood, was green-lit Tuesday evening following a public hearing that saw nobody speak.

A handful of letters submitted to council supported the application, which amended the property's zoning to allow a craft brewery. The zoning amendment was required because Summerland doesn’t have a zone that explicitly allows breweries.

“As a beer drinker in the Okanagan, this would be a great alternative,” supporter Mike Kosmack wrote in a letter to council. “It will be a good place for a local outing, to grab a bite and taste some beers. It will also put some focus on neighbouring vendors with foot traffic it will generate.”

When plans of the brewery first surfaced in June, building owner Brad Rauer said the business will feature local light food and craft beer that will utilize local agricultural products — opening early 2019.

The Ministry of Transportation still has to rubber stamp the application due to its proximity to Highway 97.
