Top curlers invade Kelowna

Some of the best curlers in the world will hit the ice in Kelowna this weekend.

The World Mixed Curling Championships will be held at the Kelowna Curling Club. It's the first time the event has been held in Canada.

Mike Anderson from Thornhill, Ont., will represent Canada in the 35-team field.

Anderson faces Gunter Dressler of Austria and Tomas Tisler of Slovenia in his first two round robin games at noon and 8 p.m. on Saturday.

The field includes two-time world champion Andrea Schopp of Germany plus a foursome from Brazil.

Teams will be split into three nine-team pools and one eight-team pool. Teams play a complete round robin, with the top three teams from each pool advancing to the playoff round.

Playoffs begin Oct. 19, with the bronze and gold medal games Oct. 20.
