Guilty pleas entered

A West Kelowna man was expected to have his fate decided by a 12-member panel, but instead has pleaded guilty to several of the charges he faced.

Charles William Maskell, 59, appeared in court on Monday in an orange jumpsuit and looked around the courtroom.

Maskell faces numerous charges stemming from a shooting incident at a Glenrosa home in December 2016. An unidentified 33-year-old man was also arrested at the scene.

Upon searching the home after the incident, police say they found evidence of the shooting, and evidence suggesting the home was being used in the trafficking of illicit drugs, possibly cocaine and GHB.

Maskell was originally charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and unlawfully discharging a firearm.

On Monday, he entered guilty pleas to possession of a loaded, restricted or prohibited firearm, which was a .22 caliber handgun. And he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of assault causing bodily harm. He did not plead guilty to count one of attempted murder with a weapon.

He also pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a weapon from a different incident in August.

The courtroom heard that Maskell is re-electing his mode of trial from judge and jury to a provincial court judge.

A pre-sentence report was requested, with a psychiatric or psychological component.

Maskell will remain in custody and is expected to appear in court next on Nov. 5 at 9 a.m.
