Hammer suspect in custody

A suspect is now in custody following a hammer attack on the Queensborough Bridge in New Westminster, B.C.

The attack occurred  Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. and involved an attack on an elderly man followed by two people who tried to intervene and help.

"When officers arrived, the suspect still had the weapon in his hand," the New Westminster Police Department said in a news release. "The male did not listen to police direction to drop the weapon, and again began attacking one of the victims."

Police managed to get the offender to drop the hammer before they could take the individual into custody.

It's not clear how seriously the victims are injured but police have indicated they are not life-threatening.

"We are thankful that this was not worse than it was, which can be attributed to the people who helped stop the attack and the quick response of NWPD patrol officers," Sgt. Jeff Scott said in a statement.

The suspect's name has not been released and he remains in custody pending a court appearance.
