Walking to save lives

Chantelle Deacon

Annual Kidney Walks took place throughout B.C. and Yukon on Sunday morning.

Hundreds if not thousands of people walked to raise awareness and funds for kidney transplants and organ donation in Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton.

"We are here for the 2018 Vernon Kidney Walk raising funds for the Kidney Foundation of BC and Yukon and we are so excited that we've had an amazing turnout, that more people have been coming on and the event has been growing every year because we really rely on the funds from the community," said Heather Sharpe, Kidney Walk Vernon, coordinator.

"Kidney disease is one of those silent killers that people just don't really know that they have until it's too late," she said. "It's really important that people realize that it is a real thing and that you can be a living kidney donor."

Sharpe encourages everyone to be an organ donor, adding that it can save one or multiple lives.

Vernon raised about $10,000 at this years walk.

Last year, Kidney Walk BC and Yukon raised $348,000 to better the lives of people living with kidney disease. This year the goal is to raise $400,000.
