Trapped in car for six hours

A Comox man spent more than six hours trapped in his vehicle Friday morning after he swerved to avoid an animal and crashed, near Port Alberni.

The man was driving along Highway 4 near Cameron Lake at about 4 a.m. when the incident happened. His vehicle was wrecked and was out of view from drivers on the highway.

Jason Coert discovered the trapped man after stopping at a rest area nearby, while on the way to Port Alberni to do a drywalling job.

“I could hear the guy yelling so [I] go to try and get him out and then realizing he’s pinned... no we’re not getting you out and you just got to sit here and wait, but help’s on the way,” Coert told CTV.

The victim said he'd been yelling for help, and told rescuers his cell phone was just out of his reach while he was pinned for the six-plus hours.

First responders rushed to the area at about 10 a.m. and extricated the man, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Rescuers said the car went over an embankment and stopped in trees, which they said likely prevented the car from landing in the lake.
