Snow falls at Big White

Summer in the Okanagan Valley is going out similar to how it came in – with rain. But at higher elevations, it's beginning to look a lot like winter.

While it may still be a little early to get too excited for fresh powder runs, skiers and boarders in Kelowna woke Friday morning to find a healthy dumping of snow at the top of Big White's Bullet chair, shown on the resort's webcam. The webcam sits at 2,195 metres elevation.

Unfortunately, opening day at Big White is still two months away, weather dependant.

In the North Okanagan, webcams at the top of SilverStar Resort show a light dusting of snow at the top of the Comet chair, while conditions appear bare in the south at Apex Mountain Resort.

Doug Lundquist, meteorologist with Environment Canada, says snow at the higher elevations is “not at all unusual” for this time of year.

Meanwhile, the mountain passes around the Okanagan appear to be wet Friday morning, but free from snow. There's no sign of snow on Highway 97C's Pennask Summit, which sits at just over 1,700 metres elevation, or at the Coquihalla Summit, at just 1,230 metres.

Looking forward, Lundquist says some more showers are expected in the Valley Saturday, followed by warmer, drier weather next week, reaching temperatures of 20 C.
