Charity plant sale goes Sat.

The Summerland Friends of the Ornamental Gardens is holding its annual Fall plant sale this Saturday, raising money for maintenance of the site.

A wide variety of perennials, shrubs, trees and native plants will be for sale at the Ornamental Gardens, 4200 Hwy 97 South, on Sept. 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A half-hour workshop called “Fall Planting for Spring Success” with Kathryn McCourt will run from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Proceeds from the plant sale support the maintenance at the six-hectare site which requires two full-time gardeners and hundreds of volunteer hours to keep it looking beautiful.

This plant sale is perhaps more important for the Friends of the Gardens nonprofit than in past years. Last month thieves struck donation bins at the site twice, forcing them to close for the time being. The charity brought in about $12,000 from the boxes, a large chunk of its $50,000 budget.

About 20,000 visitors stop at the gardens annually.
