Warriors finally at 100%

A trip to the BC Hockey League Showcase in Chilliwack may be what the doctor ordered for the West Kelowna Warriors.

Off to a 1-3 start, and forced to play with a short bench to start the season, the Warriors will be at full strength, and looking to build on recent success at the event in Chilliwack.

The Warriors have won eight in a row at the annual four-day event, which brings all 17 teams together, under the watchful eye of a few hundred college and pro scouts.

Over the first six years of the event, the Warriors hold a 10-2 record.

The Warriors will also welcome Matt Kowalski back into the lineup.

Kowalski returns after serving a four-game suspension imposed at the end of last season.

"He's a really important player for us, and I think when you lose a player like that at the start of the year, it creates a hole you can't fill," said head coach Geoff Grimwood.

"I think he's just going to make our whole lineup better."

Kowalski was allowed to play in pre season games, and lit the lamp five times prior to the start of the season.

Grimwood doesn't think the two weeks off will have much of an affect.

"I think there will be an adjustment time for him, but he's an adaptable kid, and I don't think it's going to faze him too much."

Connor Hopkins is expected to get the call in goal for the first game of the Showcase, 1:30 Thursday against the unbeaten Prince George Spruce Kings.

Despite the record, Grimwood says he's pretty happy with the effort put forward.

"We're taking a big-picture approach. We're not happy with 1-3, but we're very happy with what we have to work with.

"We think we have a good team here, there's a lot to build on. You can take your lumps in this division, and we've run into three pretty good teams right off the bat."

One area that does have to improve is special teams, especially the penalty kill.

The Warriors are at the bottom of the league with an ugly 12.5 per cent efficiency rating...surrendering seven goals in eight opportunities.

The power play has scored just twice in eight chances on the power play, and have given up a shorthanded goal.

The Warriors will face off against Nanaimo at 1 p.m. Friday to conclude the Showcase.

They'll get a few days off after the Chilliwack trip before hosting Wenatchee Wednesday and Salmon Arm Friday.
