Dyas makes bid for mayor

UPDATE 1:21 p.m.

Former Kelowna Chamber of Commerce president Tom Dyas has tossed his hat in the ring to become the next  mayor of Kelowna.

Dyas says he wants to run the city more like a business, "this city generates $200 million in revenue every year, it is a business."

Dyas is now vying against four others for the position in the Oct. 20 election, including incumbent Colin Basran, Josh Hoggan, Bob Schewe and Bobby Kennedy.

Dyas is the first high-profile challenger to join the fray, and says he's been working on the idea for over a year.

"I believe the tone comes from the top and we need to make sure that tone is strong."

Dyas declined to take any shots at Colin Basran, saying they have known each other for years, but the fact he's running against Basran speaks volumes.

Dyas also indicated he intends to make the issue of downtown safety a key election platform, "every time I read about a needle being found on a beach I cringe."

Homelessness will also be a hot topic and he indicates he's against the speculation tax and would work to at the very least modify that tax if not scrap it altogether.

Dyas refused to be baited into lashing out against the current mayor and council and says he hopes his candidacy will at the very least shine a spotlight on safety in the downtown core, homelessness and building a better business climate.

Dyas is also busy as the Chairman of the Kelowna Rockets' 2020 Memorial Cup Bid Committee which he indicates is almost at the presentation stage.
