Fire evacuates lodge again

For the second time this month, the Cathedral Lakes Lodge has been evacuated due to threat of wildfire.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen issued an evacuation order for the lodge and its basecamp late Friday morning, as the Cool Creek wildfire burns nearby.

The lodge had previously been evacuated on Aug. 1 because of the Placer Mountain wildfire, an order that was in place for seven days.

"The RDOS recognizes that the lodge operators and staff take evacuation orders seriously, and have established well-rehearsed plans," the regional district said in a news release, noting more than 80 hikers were shuttled out smoothly during the previous evacuation.

The regional district also thanked the park for "remaining vigilant during this challenging wildfire season."

The park was also closed for nearly a month in September 2017 due to the Diamond Creek wildfire.

As of Friday morning, the lightning-caused Cool Creek wildfire remained mapped at 6,900 hectares in size.

The province also put an area restriction in place on Friday for a large section of Crown land near the blaze, which will remain in place until Sept. 15 unless rescinded sooner.

A large rural area south of Princeton, Hedley and Keremeos is uner an evacuation alert. Affected properties can be found here
