YLW, YYF flights halted

UPDATE: 5:45 p.m.

Almost 30 flights from Kelowna International Airport have been cancelled in the last 24 hours.

YLW Airport emergency operations manager Sean Parker said mainly the issues have been arriving flights.

Over 10 flights were cancelled on Sunday, many of which are Air Canada flights.

“You can guesstimate 100 to 75 passengers per aircraft, so well over 1,000 people have probably been impacted in total,” said Parker.

Horizontal visibility has gotten better at YLW on Sunday afternoon.

“We are expecting some changes over the next 23 to 36 hours,” said Parker. “Smoke is going to still here but the visibility should improve.”

Conditions have been evolving and fluid over the last few days and travellers should monitor their flight status online.

Wildfire smoke is impacting flights flying in and out of Kelowna International Airport.

YLW said Sunday morning that passengers are advised to check their flight status on their airline’s website before arriving at the airport.

Five flights departing from Kelowna have been cancelled so far and five flights expected to arrive in Kelowna have been cancelled.

Air quality across the Okanagan Valley is currently at a very high risk and it's expected to stay that way until Monday.

Conditions could improve Monday as it is forecasted to drop to a moderate risk and a six out of 10.
