Part of triathlon cancelled

The Super League Triathlon in Penticton has cancelled its afternoon events for Saturday due to poor air quality.

Organizers had postponed the women's and men's pro races about four hours earlier before announcing their cancellation just after 1 p.m.

The event's age-group races went ahead on Saturday morning with some modifications.

"We took the necessary precautions... We shortened the event, it was a great success," organizer Michael D’Hulst said.

The triathlon thanked participating athletes for their patience and said Sunday's events are expected at this point to go ahead as scheduled.

"Stay safe out there, and spare a thought for those whose homes or livelihoods are threatened by these fires. Should you spot a public safety official, please thank them for their service," the event said in an update on Facebook.

Air quality in the South Okanagan was rated at 10-plus early Saturday afternoon, which is expected to persist into the evening according to the air quality health index.

* A update previously included in this story said the triathlon had been entirely called off for the weekend, however a news release was misinterpreted and only Saturday's events are cancelled.
