Senior struck by SUV

An elderly woman is in hospital with serious injuries after being struck while crossing Baron Road.

An RCMP officer investigating a property damage collision on the 1900 block of Underhill Street was flagged down about 12:30 p.m. and alerted to an injured pedestrian involved in a collision not far away.

Police believe the 82-year-old woman was walking across Baron Road when she was struck by a red Buick Enclave making a left turn from Underhill. Witnesses say the woman landed on the hood of the SUV before falling under the vehicle's tires.

The victim was conscious and breathing when police arrived at the scene. She was rushed to hospital by paramedics, in stable condition. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The driver, a 48-year-old man from Fort Saskatchewan Alta., remained at the scene and was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian.

"RCMP would like to acknowledge the number of bystanders who jumped in to provide first aid to the injured woman and keep her calm and as comfortable as possible while emergency medical crews responded to the scene," said Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey.
