Hwy 5A likely open soon

UPDATE: 9:40 p.m.

DriveBC reports Highway 5A will likely reopen between 11 p.m. and midnight between Merritt and Kamloops.

The approximately 90-kilometre stretch of highway has been closed for six hours due to a material spill. Drivers have been asked to use the Coquihalla Highway as a detour in the meantime.

It's believed the spill is due to a semi-truck crash near Nicola Lake.

ORIGINAL: 3:45 p.m.

A material spill has Highway 5A closed in both directions between Merritt and Kamloops, DriveBC reports.

Further details of the incident are unknown, but DriveBC says an assessment is in progress.

It's unclear when the highway will reopen, and drivers are advised to use the Coquihalla Highway as an alternate route.
