Bike chop shop cleaned up

The saga of 377 Winnipeg is not yet over, with a trailer-load of bikes spotted being hauled out of the property mid-afternoon Thursday.

The notorious problem property is now boarded up following this week's eviction, but RCMP and bylaw officers are still cleaning up the premises.

Bylaw officer Jamie Benoit said the dozens of bikes hauled out Thursday are headed for the scrap yard.

"They are being salvaged now, RCMP did their due diligence with finding out if there's any stolen properties here," Benoit said. "They checked if they were eligible to be donated to any charities, nobody wanted anything that wasn't fully assembled, so they are going for metal salvage now."

RCMP recovered some bikes and other stolen property Wednesday, but the bikes left behind were deemed too altered from stripping and reassembling to be able to be returned to owners.

Bylaw officers fenced off the back side of the property following the removal of the bikes, but a large disposal bin remains in the alley, and Benoit said cleanup efforts will be continuing.
