Mussels would cost millions

The Kelowna Chamber of Commerce is calling for “decisive action” now on the issue of invasive quagga and zebra mussels.

The species have affected fresh waters east of Saskatchewan and in the southwestern United States, and the local chamber would like to see 24-hour border monitoring “to intercept infested watercraft as they enter the Okanagan from both the U.S. and from B.C.’s eastern border.”

The Kelowna chamber has been pleading with all levels of government since 2015 about the mussels issue, and it doesn’t believe the $500,000 that has been pledged federally for research and education will keep Okanagan Lake free from infestation.
