An abandoned mobile home in Penticton has burned to the ground overnight.

Firefighters responded to a call to the Whitewater mobile home park at  3245 Paris St, unit 93 for reports of a unit on fire.

Penticton Fire department Captain, Graham Gowe tells Castanet, "the unit had been abandoned for many years and was in disrepair. The city boarded it up a while back but that hasn't stopped squatters, people were still using it."

The structure has now been completely destroyed, "the fire was threatening the home to the east and we were able to keep the fire from spreading to that house so we're pretty happy about that."

Fire investigators will return to the scene later today but Gowe says there isn't much left of the structure at this point.
