Signs of fire danger

As the fire hazard remains extreme in the Central Okanagan, new sandwich board reminders are being circulated around regional parks.

The signs remind park users of the fire danger and that smoking and open fires are not allowed.

Anyone caught throwing cigarettes from vehicles could be hit with a $1,075 fine.

Eight of the folding signs are being rotated around parks in the Kelowna area. This is in addition to permanent signs that have been posted at interface parks since 2015.

Off-roaders are also reminded that heat from exhaust pipes could cause a fire in dry grass.

Communications officer Bruce Smith says: “These new, brightly coloured signs remind our visitors of the extreme fire hazard and that smoking and open flames and campfires are not allowed at any time. As well, if anyone in the park sees a fire, they should immediately call 911. It’s really about being proactive and raising awareness for park visitors in an effort to prevent any fires from happening in the first place.”
